Everyone knows that origami originates in Japan. Upon deeper look, though, it turns out that Spain challenges the title of origami birthplace!

The first origami figurine in Spain is the figure of the pajarita bird. Its first appearance is believed to be the XII century Spanish city of Toledo. The word pajarita became the title of the game Pajarita Pinta. Around the same time, paper making mills start appearing. Unfortunately, this is all the evidence available that supports this theory. If this is true, then pajarita bird becomes the first European origami figure.

Spain has one more unique feature. Origami here is called simply "doing pajarita," and the word pajarita is suitable for both the figure of a bird, and the craft in general. You can only understand the difference in context.

The image of the pajarita is so significant for the Spaniards that in the 1930s it was commemorated with a paired sculpture in one of the cities in Spain (Huesca). The figure itself is quite simple to fold. It is based on the catamarans basic form. That means that even if you are new in the origami craft, you can still easily fold it.
